REASONS TO REMOVE A DOG’S LARYNX

At the DogRun: A Weekly Gossip Update!
I’ve heard a lot of barking around the dogrun about my old friend Sounder… it sounds like his “So-Called” best friends have opt-ed to have him DeBarked. It sounds as if HIS PEOPLE just couldn’t handle what he had to say… Note to My Dog Readership: Never discuss politics with family, co-workers or best friends.

This got me to thinking…Why do people remove animals’ voices? It seems so antiquated and oppressive.

REASONS TO REMOVE A DOG’S LARYNX: Person’s Perspective

1.) You live in a six story walk up on the lower east side, which is bad enough, but now the hipster’s, PUPSTER, that lives next-door, is yapping up a storm especially when HIS PEOPLE play “Interpol” or “TV on the Radio” (which BTW is one pawsome band).

2.) You live in a West Virginia trailer park and the single-mom with five kids next-door, all have their own dog, each of which is a mutt— all of which you’d prefer be sent off to the farm. These pack animals bring down the proverbial house very time you pull up in your F150 and take your gun off the rack.

3.) You live in the Brownsville’s Van Dyck housing project and the bark of the PIT-BULL next-door is truly worse then his bite— it’s like he has a Mike Tyson lisp…who by the way is from Brownsville, which gets you thinkin’ that it must be something in the water.

4.) You live in a Malibu Beach House and the bitch next-door keeps dropping shit all over your private beach, however, real problem is, she brings her dog outside with her every night she does it, unfortunately for the dog she carries him is a LV doggie-bag that he can’t stand, and unfortunately for you he’s very vocal about it.

5.) You live in a gated-community, inside another gated community in Scottsdale, AZ, your neighbor’s brother-in-law is a cop who gets his jollies by pulling over VW’s that drive too far to the left, you have three mini-dachshunds that barely make a sound, but for some reason…said neighbor keeps complaining to said cop who keeps complaining to animal control, who tells you, you have three options…1.) Get rid of the dogs, 2.) Move outside of said gated community into the less-exclusive gated-community, 3.) Rip out the little krauts larynxes out.

THE ANSWER: NON-OF THE ABOVE
We have right to express ourselves! People do stuff to our ears (a way we express ourselves), stuff to our tails (another way we express ourselves) and now they’re cutting out our cords… when will it stop? We need to be able to communicate with other dogs and with people. It’s our right to… let you know when we’re hungry, have to go to the bathroom or when a burglar is in the house. When people take away our voices, we get frustrated, and when we get frustrated, we attempt to de-flower stuffed animals and commit sneaker atrocities.

Here’s how the procedure works: A Vet (hopefully) reaches down through our mouths to our larynxes with a “biopsy punch” or a pair of scissors and removes a portion of our vocal folds. It is said that most dogs who are “debarked” can still vocalize, just at a lower pitched sound. However, sometimes if there is an attempt to remove the entire vocal fold, our little larynxes get blocked by scar tissue, so we don’t even want to TRY and make a yelp for help.

People, you created this world, and under your rules we need help to make it in this world. What are we to do when you can’t hear us ask for help?

PS… In my research, I came across a “Myth” that “Criminals and drug dealers debark dogs?” Is this true, is it is… I’ve sure as hell never heard about that before.

HUMANS RELY IN PRECIDENT
It all starts out with DEBARKING dogs and next thing you know, people will be doing this kind of stuff like this to their children…. If they aren’t already:

This practice was pioneered by puppy mills. They did it to hide the fact that that they had a shitload of dogs crammed into an inadequate space.

The last decade the public has caught on and now it is an option to the average dog owner.

It is a disgraceful mutilation of the noble canine.

Although I am a cat lover I appreciate a good dog.

Training people, training is the key. Not mutilation.

    Debarking a dog is not inhumane or mutilation, as so many people here have insinuated. Allow me to explain;
The actual procedure entails a skilled vet going down a dogs throat and simply puncturing the dogs vocal chords (it is not removing a dog’s larynx or voice box, not is it severing the dogs vocal chords)
This procedure is LESS risky and painful then removing the ovaries or testicles during the neutering process, which, for whatever reason, is NOT seen as inhumane, or as mutilation.
As with any medical procedure, there are some risks involving the use of anesthesia, and in some cases, debarked dogs can get their bark back later after scar tissue develops over the puncture (this does not happen in many cases)
This results in a QUIETER bark, NOT silence. Often times this is a ‘last resort’ for owners of especially hard-to-train dogs (Huskies, Beagles), talkative dogs (Chihuahuas, most small breeds) or dogs with especially high pitched barks (Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs-most herding dogs).

  20. Gwen September 1, 2008 at 10:12 pm #

I’m not sure if debarking originated in puppy mills-I have not read anything to support that claim, though debarking is indeed popular with dog hoarders (you could argue a puppy mill owner is a hoarder) and dog fighting ring owners as a ploy to disguise their ownership of many dogs.

In these unfortunate cases, however, these pitiful owners are breeding unregistered dogs, in which case, regulation and criminalization of debarking would prove as effective as the ‘war on drugs’. You can’t regulate something among people breaking the law in the first place, so why punish. slander and ostracize responsible pet owners?

Also, some dogs are not able to be trained to bark less, especially if you have more than one dog, as barking is part of pack mentality. I’d pay $1000 to anyone who could honestly say they have trained a pair of Shetland Sheepdogs to bark less. Seriously.
I’d also love to hear of anyone who hasn’t received some sort of ultimatum from a landlord or neighbor regarding a dog with a high pitched or incessant bark.

This is also not a ‘slippery slope to eugenics’.
That is like saying that sterilization (spaying/neutering) is tied to eugenics as well. Puncturing a dogs bark has nothing to go with genes or evolution…No matter how many generations of pups you have spayed or neutered, the next generation will always have sex organs. No matter how many dogs you debark, their pups will always have vocal chords intact.
There is no manner of eugenics that can alter the vocal chords of a dog. To make such a statement shows complete ignorance of all associated subjects.

All the hundreds of different breeds of dogs we have today are the result of eugenics-artificial selection-over thousands of years, yet rottweilers and terriers are still being born with full length tails that continue to be docked, collies are still being born with floppy ears that are still being clipped and tipped, etc…But none of these dogs are being born with already docked tails or already tipped ears. Why?

Because these procedures have nothing to do with genes.

If I cut off my thumb, my children and grandchildren and so on will not be born without a thumb. They will all have thumbs. If I am born without a thumb through some sort of genetic mutation, perhaps my descendants could be born without a thumb, but only through an outside genetic chance of that mutation passing onto them, though it is no guarantee.

Eugenics is not some sort of immediate Frankenstein procedure-There are always limits. Perhaps educating yourselves before making audacious claims would benefit the world.

I hae three dogs. A Rott/Chow mix, a Bearded Collie and a Blue Healer. They are all wonderful dogs who were going to be put down as pups for one reason or another.

The Healer has always been very teritorial and a barker. It wasn’t a big deal when the boys had 20 acres to live on, but the four of us were forced to move to the city last year. It has become a problem. I have tried to train him, done the spray collar, the sound collar, the external sound device, the training shock collar and as a last resort, the shock collar. None of these make him stop when he sees anything or anyone move.

I am considering getting the procedure done on him because I can’t stand the way the pain form the shock collar hurts him and has worn his neck raw as he just barks threw the pain. I don’t want to have it done, but it’s either that or I’ll have to put the poor dog down. My neighbors can’t take the barking either. I’ve tried to find him a new home, but he’s a very hard to deal with dog who has special needs. Any suggestions are welcome.

I own sentry Rottweilers and had them debarked so the would be intruder would not be deterred by the barking but caught and or shot to keep predators off the street. It has worked and the would be assailant was shot and killed not to harm the innocent again, that is why people including government have their dogs debarked I could care less about a barking “pet” dog but sentry working dogs are a different matter

I came here to figure out how to rip out my dumb ass terriers vocal cords. She is a great dog but she barks for every damn sound and wakes my newborn baby up.

I either put her down or take out the cords.
